2010 California Automobile Museum - Holiday Decorating

We drove our 1950 Studebaker Champion to the California Automobile Museum to view the Karel Staple Chapter xmas tree. I must admit to walking up just as they snapped the group picture, and can't take credit for any of the decorating.

Anyway, here are a few photographs from the event, including a few photos of a gorgeous 1923 Studebaker Model EL Special Six 5 Passenger Sedan. I'm told that much of the paint on the EL is original!

Woodward Dream Cruise - 2010 - Studebaker

Will you be there? The SDC is meeting at "Hunter Blvd. (S. Old Woodward Ave) between Maple & Lincoln in Downtown Birmingham."

"Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe—from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the former Soviet Union. North American cruisers from California, Georgia, Canada and all points in between caravan to Metro Detroit to participate in what has become, for many, an annual rite of summer."

Sad Loss for Studebaker Family

"Ed Reynolds, a longtime friend of Phil Brown's, wonders if the pleasant weather on Sunday prompted the 60-year-old Osceola resident to bring his 1967 Avanti out of storage for the first time this year.

Sadly for Reynolds and Brown's many other friends and acquaintances, it would be the last.

Brown was killed about 3:30 p.m. as he was heading east on Dragoon Trail, near the intersection with Blackberry Road, when his car left the roadside and rolled, ejecting him."

Our condolences to Phil's family. Full article here.

1950 9G Studebaker Champion Engine

We were told that our '50 Champion had a '53 engine. I finally checked the engine number, 536180 (with a #2 below it), and it looks like the engine belongs in a 9G '50 Champ - our car. Any guidance or clarification is appreciated.

Update - This from Dwain G. on Google Groups:

"At the very top, front, left (driver's) side of the engine block is a smooth machined pad about 1/2" tall by 2" long. Find that area and clean it off with a putty knife, wire brush, sandpaper, whatever and tell us what you find there. There should be no real difference between a '50 and a '53 engine, but a lot of differences from '55-on."

See a listing of Studebaker engine numbers at the SDC website.

I'll inspect my engine this week. Until then...

5 Things To Do After You Buy a Studebaker

A great list by the Studebaker's Drivers Club - "5 Things To Do After You Buy a Studebaker."

My only addition is that you contact a local garage that services older cars; employers/owners are a wealth of knowledge.

View the list of to-dos at the Studebaker Drivers club website.
